Five checks before you buy any medicine
1. Check the pharmacy is licensed
Retail pharmacies in Nepal must hold a Department of Drug Administration (DDA) licence, displayed at the counter. A pharmacist or registered assistant should be present while medicines are dispensed.
2. Check the medicine is registered
Every product should carry a DDA registration number, batch number, manufacturing and expiry dates, and the generic name — not only a brand name.
3. Never buy antibiotics without a prescription
Antibiotics, sedatives and controlled medicines legally require a prescription. Buying them over the counter drives antimicrobial resistance and hides the real diagnosis.
4. Keep the bill and packaging
Ask for a printed bill and keep the strip or carton until the course is complete — it is the only way to trace a batch if a reaction or quality problem occurs.
5. Report a suspected substandard medicine
If a product looks tampered with, has no batch details or causes an unexpected reaction, stop it, contact the prescriber, and report it to the DDA with the packaging.
