Key points

  • This is the final report for the 2022 survey; June 2023 is its publication date.
  • New ERA implemented the survey under the aegis of Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population.
  • DHS covers fertility, family planning, maternal and child health and nutrition.
  • Use weighted estimates and the relevant eligibility and recall periods for comparisons.

What the Nepal DHS final report offers

The Nepal Demographic and Health Survey 2022 provides nationally representative household and respondent evidence across demographic and health topics. The official DHS publication record identifies the final report and its implementing partners. It is an important companion to MICS and census publications, rather than a replacement for either.

The report covers fertility, family planning, maternal and child health, nutrition, household characteristics and HIV/AIDS-related topics. Select a chapter and table that directly match your research question instead of quoting an unlabelled headline percentage.

Measurement year versus release year

The survey round is 2022; the final report was published in June 2023. Indicators may also use recall windows, such as births or deaths in a specified period before the survey. A publication date alone therefore cannot identify the period an estimate describes.

When comparing DHS with MICS 2024–25, first check the eligible age range, questionnaire wording, reference period and calculation method. Differences in survey design can create differences in estimates even without a substantive population change.

Using DHS for programme and academic work

DHS is useful for population baselines, inequalities and patterns of service use. Routine health-system data answer a different question: what reporting services recorded. Their numerators and denominators should not be mixed without a clear analytic justification.

For secondary analysis, obtain the appropriate dataset through the DHS access process and account for weights, strata and clusters. Describe missing data and sampling uncertainty. This introductory guide does not reproduce unverified prevalence figures from the full report.

Citation and official access

Use the official final-report record FR379 and copy its suggested citation, adding the chapter and table number for every statistic. In a report, state ‘Nepal DHS 2022’ rather than treating it as a 2023 survey.

The linked publication record is the primary access point for the report. This article is an independent guide to scope and responsible interpretation, not a substitute for the survey’s detailed tables or methodology.
