New and Updated JE Vaccination Guidelines by FWD, DoHS Nepal

Nepal’s Ministry of Health and Population recently issued an updated directive. This was done under the Family Welfare Division. The directive is regarding the appropriate timing for administering the JE (Japanese Encephalitis) vaccine. This new guideline specifically addresses the safe use of the JE vaccine. It is the Live Attenuated JE Vaccine SA 14-14-2. The vaccine is manufactured by Chengdu Institute of Biological Products Co., Ltd, China.

Key Points of the Updated Guidelines:

  1. Usage Timing Adjustment:
    • The JE vaccine should now be used within 6 hours after opening the vial. This change is revised from the previously stipulated 1-hour limit.
  2. Disposal of Remaining Vaccine:
    • Any remaining vaccine in the vial after 6 hours of opening must be discarded safely. It’s important to prioritize proper waste management. Infection control is also crucial.
  3. Safety Precautions:
    • All healthcare providers must strictly adhere to national immunization schedules and guidelines. Special attention is required for proper documentation and timely disposal of vaccine vials.
