National Strategic Plan to End Tuberculosis (2021/22–2025/26)
Issued by National Tuberculosis Control Center · 2021
In short: Nepal's plan to find the 'missing' TB cases, expand rapid molecular diagnosis and improve treatment success, including for drug-resistant TB.
Overview
The 2018–19 national TB prevalence survey found many more TB cases than had been reported. In response, the plan scales up active case finding, GeneXpert testing and patient-centred care, in line with the WHO End TB Strategy.
Key provisions
- Active case finding in high-risk groups and communities.
- Wider rapid molecular testing (GeneXpert) for TB and rifampicin resistance.
- Shorter, all-oral treatment regimens for drug-resistant TB.
- Social support for patients, and private-sector engagement in notifying cases.
Why it matters
TB is still a leading infectious cause of death in Nepal. Finding and treating the missing cases is essential to ending it.
What it means for practitioners
- Test anyone with a cough lasting two weeks or more. Use molecular tests where available.
- Notify every TB case, including those diagnosed in private practice.
Frequently asked questions
Is TB treatment free in Nepal?
